There are lots of Myths and an even greater number of “experts” on breast augmentation. Dr Google has not helped the situation. Let’s “demystify” some of these Myths:

1. My breast implants need to be changed every 10 years.

Failure of the implant would start to occur after 10 years. Nowadays with silicone gel implants they are a lifelong product and most companies offer a warranty to match.

2. I won’t be able to breastfeed.

Not every woman can breastfeed. However having a breast-implant has no impact on whether you will be able to feed or not. Breastmilk is best for baby and all surgeons would encourage women to breastfeed if it is physically possible for them.

3. I am more susceptible to breast cancer if I have implants.

Indeed it is directly the opposite. Women who have breast implants usually have smaller breasts and smaller breasts have a lower incidence of breast cancer. There is absolutely no link whatsoever between having breast implants and breast cancer.

4. Breast cancer scanning will damage my implants.

Modern-day breast implants are extremely durable. Having a medical examination either with an ultrasound or a mammogram will have no impact on the implants. It may be uncomfortable but it will not damage the implants.

5. An ultrasound will be able to show if my implants are damaged.

It may do. However an ultrasound is not a definitive examination and in most cases we might proceed to an MRI examination if great detail is required.
