Brisbane based specialist plastic surgeon Dr Dan Kennedy has been elected as the new President of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). Dr Kennedy has a background as an examiner for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and, as a supervisor of surgical training in a public hospital.  Dr Kennedy considers standards in surgery and training as well as ethics as crucial issues for ASPS. We are happy to announce to our community that Australia’s peak body for Specialist Plastic Surgeons elects new President.

Strong Representation of Women Elected to ASPS

Dr Kennedy noted with pleasure the strong representation of women elected as office bearers to the ASPS board. Dr Nicola Dean from Adelaide was elected Vice President; Dr Gill Farrell from Melbourne as Treasurer and Dr Kim Taylor, also from Melbourne, was appointed Secretary.

“I am delighted to see improved insight into body image issues spread through our specialty. This understanding will result in better outcomes for patients,” says Dr Kennedy.

Guidance for Specialist Plastic Surgeons through Pandemic

Dr Kennedy says he is honoured to lead the ASPS and looks forward to continuing the important work of advocating for specialist plastic surgeons and their patients, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We are working hard to maintain a close communication with governments and health departments to ensure all our surgeons are able to return to work in a timely and safe manner,” says Dr Kennedy.

“This has been a challenging period with restrictions on elective surgery placing stress on many members’ practices.”

Dr Kennedy attended Medical School at the University of Queensland. He completed advanced training in Plastic Surgery at Princess Alexandra Hospital, Royal Brisbane Hospital and Royal Children’s Hospital. Dr Kennedy finished his training with a year in London specially focussed on facial reanimation surgery.

Dr Kennedy subsequently undertook a Cosmetic Fellowship in London before returning to Australia in 1993. Since that time, he has worked as a Consultant Plastic Surgeon in the Public Hospital system and worked in private practice specialising in the areas of facial and breast surgery.
