Muffin top, spare tyre, jelly belly, paunch… Most of us have parts of our bodies where we’d like to get rid of a little bit of stubborn fat (can you tell mine’s around my belly?). There are quite a few surgical and non-surgical ways to get rid of these frustrating little fatty bits and give our bodies the profile and contour that we want. Dr Mark Edinburg and the Eden Institute of Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery and their Eden Medispa in Sydney offer their patients several options for body contouring and they chatted to us about these so we could create your body contouring guide.
Dr Edinburg says while they always encourage patients to stick to a good diet and exercise regime and keeping to a healthy meal plan which can help you lose weight and improve your overall health, their patients sometimes need a bit of extra help. He says, “An interesting fact told to us by our patients is that often, once they have had procedures like CoolSculpting or Liposuction or Tummy Tuck, they are so pumped by the new look that they find themselves more motivated to keep working.”
So, what are the body contouring options?
1. Freeze the fat
Sometimes no matter how hard you work on your diet or exercise there are pockets of fat that just won’t budge. CoolSculpting is a fat freezing procedure that has in recent years become the go-to treatment for non-surgical body contouring. Using a process called apoptosis, CoolSculpting freezes your fat cells whereby they effectively die and your body then naturally metabolises and eliminates them over the following 4 – 12 weeks. Dr Edinburg says, “Until we found CoolSculpting, there was nothing available that was research evidenced and scientific, that did not require surgery, that I could confidently recommend for my patients. I investigated many products that had little scientific basis or had poor results or were too uncomfortable to tolerate. Our results over the past 4 years have exceeded our expectations, and CoolSculpting gives shape back where shape has disappeared.
“Treatments can be done in our Clinic, with little to no downtime, and we can treat more than 1 area at a time, as we have 2 machines to work with, specialist Nurse therapists, and all the newest technology in house, You will generally notice a 20% visible reduction of fat in the treated area. Results may be seen as soon as 30 days, with optimal results seen between 8 and 12 weeks. You may require 1 or more treatments to each area, depending on your shape and needs. And.as with most things of value, please beware of copies- we are now seeing fat reduction copiers presenting with burns or poor results.
We have a CoolSculpting event on Saturday 30th June, with limited appointments times, to allow patients to see exactly how fat freezing works. An added bonus is special pricing on the day.”
Liposuction is the tried and true way to eliminate stubborn areas of fat for good. It is suitable for just about any area on your body including:
- upper arms
Liposuction can target one or more areas, and gives Dr Edinburg the opportunity ro resculpt areas patients are concerned about, all at the same time. Dr Edinburg says it’s important to note that general obesity cannot be treated with liposuction – there is a limit to how much fat can be removed during a liposuction procedure and it is suitable for more localised areas of fat.
3. Tummy Tuck
If you have excess skin after major weight loss or pregnancy, or as Dr Edinburg says, you have a ‘spare tyre’ around your abdomen area, you may consider a tummy tuck or abdominoplasty. This is the surgical option when the non-surgical options just won’t cut it (excuse the pun!). “A tummy tuck is most effective if you are close to your ideal weight but have loose abdominal skin, fat, and weakened muscles from pregnancy, weight loss or the effects of ageing,” Dr Edinburg clarifies. “It is wonderful to see how much confidence my patients gain when they have a flatter abdomen and a more natural looking body. They report so much satisfaction being able to choose clothes without always hiding most of themselves. This confidence seems to translate into so many different aspects of their lives.”
Dr Edinburg and his team at the Eden Institute believe in an individualised approach for each patient and will help you identify which option will suit you best. You may even have a combination of more than one of these body contouring options if it will get you the body you want. “The benefits of having body surgery or body contouring treatments stem much deeper than just physical improvements. Enhancing your body shape can lead to increased self-esteem and a more positive body image, which can have a positive impact on many other aspects of your life.”
