More commonly known as “a nose job’, rhinoplasty is one of the most frequently asked-for plastic surgery procedures. Like many surgical procedures, it has benefited from a range of developments and new techniques to ensure this procedure garners excellent results.

People can request a rhinoplasty for a number of reasons; to reduce the size of the nose, to narrow, widen or straighten the nose or to correct a variety of functional issues including breathing, snoring, etc. Noses can be reduced and reshaped by correcting the bones and the cartilage, plus the tip of the nose and nostrils can also be altered with technically intricate surgical procedures.

Dr William Mooney, Facial Cosmetic and Rhinoplasty Surgeon based in Sydney performs the highest number of rhinoplasty procedures in Australia. Considering the nose to be the anchor of the facial features, Dr Mooney believes improving nasal contour one can radically improve their overall appearance.

Rhinoplasty is a highly complex procedure as it addresses both function and form. Our noses need to function, as well as impacting our looks. Dr Mooney favours the ‘open-structure’ rhinoplasty technique. This involves a small incision between the nostrils, which leaves an almost imperceptible scar. This technique affords the best access and results, especially for a twisted nose and for tip deformities.

The Diamond Tip

For many surgeons, the tip of the nose is the most challenging aspect, as it is the tip that contributes a large percentage to the overall appearance, for good or bad. With decades of experience, Dr Mooney has developed the ‘Diamond Tip’ surgical technique to ensure the best possible nose tip for patients. He has presented his findings at several international conferences and is referred to as one of the premier rhinoplasty surgeons in the industry.

Rhinoplasty surgery can take approximately two hours, depending on the amount of work involved, and is performed under a general anaesthetic. The ‘Diamond Tip’ surgical procedure begins with small incisions cut along the rim of the nostril and between the nostrils. The bone and cartilage is then remodeled with intricate attention to detail. The skin is then replaced over the new frame and all incisions are closed. Recovery time is minimal and you may have some swelling, but this should subside in a few days. However, the full results can take months to be full apparent and rhinoplasty is one procedure you will need to show some patience with!

Getting Results Tailored to YOU

Dr Mooney says, “Planning your nose shape is a meticulous process. Digital imaging is an excellent way for you to see different options. We always repeat this on at least two occasions before we consider surgery. Giving you realistic outcome expectations is the role of any good clinic, and planning your nose shape to be in harmony with your ethnicity and unique face shape is part of this good preparation.”
