The Ultraformer by Cryomed is an amazing device for skin tightening and skin rejuvenation and it works. Dr Jayson Oates’ from Academy Face and Body based in Sydney and Perth got the Ultraformer into his clinics earlier this year and loves the results he’s getting for his patients. I’ve had the Ultraformer treatment, Dr Oates’ has had it done too, and I’ve known of quite a few other patients with great results too. This is a great podcast to explain how and why it works.
Trish Hammond: Hello, listeners. It’s Trish Hammond here again from Transforming Bodies, and today we’re gonna have a talk with the wonderful Dr. Jayson Oates, who is one of our regular podcast contributors. And today we’re gonna talk about a device called the Ultraformer, which he’s had, I’ve had, so we can share a whole lot of info with you, so welcome, Dr. Oates.
Dr Jayson Oates: Hi, Trish. Good to be speaking with you again.
Trish Hammond: Same, same, I always love talking to you. So, now you … This is only new to your clinic, isn’t it?
Dr Jayson Oates: We’ve had it since about March of this year.
Trish Hammond: Okay. Oh, good, so a solid sort of eight, nine months?
Dr Jayson Oates: Yeah.
Trish Hammond: All right. And one thing I loved, you mentioned before that before you actually purchased it you thought you’re gonna try this. I love that. The fact that you actually try before you buy, like. And obviously you were impressed with it, and that’s why you went ahead and purchased the device so you could offer the treatment to other patients.
Can you tell us a little bit about, like, the results, like what you’re finding with it?
Dr Jayson Oates: Yeah. So, the technology’s been around for quite a long time, maybe 10 years, but when we’ve trialled it previously with other versions of the machine it was just too painful. And I really didn’t think that people were going to come in, and have this treatment, and recommend it to their friends.
But when the Ultraformer III came out they were reassuring us that the discomfort is much less, and they’re still getting these great results. And the idea of a machine that tightens skin without burning the surface off. So, with lasers we can burn the surface off and get lots of skin tightening, but not everybody wants to go through that process. And so we’ve been hunting for 20 years to have a machine that can really tighten skin.
So I thought, “I’ll try it myself this time, because if I can tolerate the machine then anybody’ll be fine with it.” And there are a few minutes there where I was certainly looking forward to it being over, but it really wasn’t that, that bad. And as soon as I got up and looked in the mirror, I thought, “Actually, it looks a little bit better already.”
I certainly wasn’t expecting to see any immediate sort of changes, and when I came into the office the next day, people were saying, “Did you have a treatment, you know, yesterday? Because, you know, something looks different.” And we took some after photos, and yeah, we could really see straight away that just that little bit of tightening of that loose skin in the jowls, and it was enough for me to say, “We’ve gotta get this, I’m probably gonna need to have this done again sometime.”
Trish Hammond: Yeah. It’s funny ’cause I remember when Cryomed introduced the device, I would always be like, “Oh yeah, I’ve gotta have it done, I’ve gotta have it done.” And I had it done probably about three months ago, and I was … I’d heard, you know, so many, like, so many people say how painful the HIFU treatment was, but, you know, that’s not actually this device, I think they’re talking about another device.
And so I was expecting the worst. I was like, “Oh my god,” like, “Am I ready for this?” And although it wasn’t like, a walk in the park, it was way more bearable than what, you know, I thought it was gonna be, and it was actually really quick. And the best thing about it is I am absolutely stoked with the results. Like it’s one of those things that you get it done, you might notice a little something at first, but then three months down the track someone says something and you’re like, “Oh my god, yeah, my jaw is sharper, it is slimmer.” You know, like, and you don’t, you kind of just sort of almost forget you’ve had it done and then three months down the track you’re like, “Hey, I’m looking good.”
Dr Jayson Oates: Yeah, that’s what I’ve had. And we most commonly now even do it as a two-treatment process, separated by three to six months. And it’s causing these microscopic little burns, really, deep underneath the skin, and they can focus it at a very specific depth so that they can tighten that deeper layer. So there’s not too much to see on the skin, and it just keeps on tightening over time. And I haven’t had a second treatment yet, but I’m just sort of thinking maybe I should. And then the plan would be, probably for most people to have a treatment maybe once a year, or every couple of years, and just maintain that sort of tightening.
And I guess it’s not an alternative to a facelift, you know, people often sort of say, oh, this is, you know, a way of having a facelift without having the surgery. But it’s certainly not pulling up the amount that I’d pull up in a facelift. But I do wonder in five years time, ten years time, will there be all these people who would have been having facelifts with me, but now have just maintained it, just by having their Ultraformer treatments.
Trish Hammond: Yeah. I don’t disagree with you, ’cause I’m always like, “Oh yeah, I really wanna have a neck lift,” and now I’m like, “No, maybe I don’t need to rush into it quite as quickly as what I might think,” you know what I mean? ‘Cause it just looks, you know, it’s not as disturbing to me as it might have been, like, say six months ago. You know, like it’s not something that I focus on every day and think, “Oh my god, I really need to do something about that.” I’ve just kind of like, it’s kind of subsided in my thoughts a little bit if that makes any sense?
Dr Jayson Oates: Yeah, no, that’s pretty much what our patients are experiencing as well. So we’ve had a really good uptake with it, people are being really happy. And yeah, it’s one of those things that people then sort of tell their friends to come in and have done as well.
And then we’re also often combining it with a treatment called Viva, which is a fractionated radio frequency treatment. And that treats the surface of the skin, so that’s that top millimetre, the epidermis, and the Ultraformer is treating sort of that three to four and a half millimetre depth, and creating the tightening. And between the two they’re giving really pleasing results.
Trish Hammond: And you were saying before that it kind of works on the SMAS layer, is that right? Like, can you explain that? Is that right? Have I said the right thing?
Dr Jayson Oates: Yeah. So when we’re doing a facelift, we’re not pulling on the skin, so much as grabbing the deeper layer, what we call the SMAS, the superficial muscular aponeurotic system, and it’s sort of a fibrous, muscular, fatty layer that has the strength for lifting up in the face. And those fat pads in the face, that are starting to droop down we want to come up, that’s all invested with the SMAS. So the Ultraformer is able to focus the ultrasound right at a specific depth. And I’ve got different heads, and there’s a four and a half millimetre head, and a three millimetre head, and it produces these, like tiny rice grain lines, burns, in that SMAS layer, and you line them all up with the handpiece, and so it creates tightening in the SMAS layer, which is sort of simulating in a non-invasive way what we are doing with a facelift.
Trish Hammond: Yeah, wow.
Dr Jayson Oates: So we’re aiming at the right spot, and that was what was always intriguing about the technology.
Trish Hammond: Of course. And so tell me so, how long does … Like, what’s the process for when a patient comes in? So you can basically, would you have a consult before, or would you …
Dr Jayson Oates: So usually they just go straight through to our dermal therapists, and they’re really experienced with all kinds of treatments and if they’re really a surgical candidate and should be looking at surgery, they’ll send them through to me. And if they’re at that, you know, not so extreme sort of level, or it’s somebody who just doesn’t want to have surgery and just wants to have a little bit of a lift, then the dermal therapists will sort them all out completely by themselves.
Trish Hammond: Okay, and how long does the treatment take? ‘Cause one thing I noticed is like, I did get … You know what, I actually can’t remember if I got numbing cream. I’m pretty sure I got numbing cream. Or maybe I didn’t get numbing cream? Oh anyway-
Dr Jayson Oates: These things, because it’s aiming deeper down, not heating the surface of the skin, numbing cream isn’t as important as, say, some other treatments. Well, sorry about that-
Trish Hammond: That’s all right.
Dr Jayson Oates: I just see a phone call coming through, but I’ll just keep doing the podcast and we’ll get to the phone later.
Trish Hammond: Yep, yep, no worries.
Dr Jayson Oates: So you can’t have numbing cream on … Sometimes it just makes, in your mind, you know, you feel better knowing that you’ve got the numbing cream on. And the treatment takes 30 to 40 minutes, and it depends how many lines of the focused ultrasound that they use, and how big an area. Whether they’re doing the cheeks, taking it up into the forehead, down into the neck. So that sort of determines how long it takes. And they have different depth handpieces, so they might go over with a three millimetre and a four and a half millimetre. They have a focused handpiece which actually creates the little burns, and they’ve got a less focused handpiece which just creates more general sort of heating. And it’s the combination of doing these treatments that gives you the result, and having therapists who are really experienced at it now can guide how they do the treatment. And there are a lot of little things they can do, like maybe tweak the eyebrow up a little bit, you know, really focus in on the jowls, that sort of treatment.
Trish Hammond: That’s what I had. I had like the upper, just the upper of the brow, just a little bit to the right, because I’m one of those people that has a … If I have Botox in my forehead, my whole forehead drops? Like I just, I’m just not lucky with the Botox. But I quite like that, you know, where the eyes have got a bit of the, you know, without looking ridiculous, like the open-eye look.
So they did a little bit for me on each side of the thing, and I could definitely, definitely notice a difference there. But one thing I noticed as well, is like, when they did the bottom of the neck … ‘Cause what they do, and I’m presuming you do it the same, but from the jaw, from the left to the right-hand side of the jaw, just underneath all the way around. And they do above the jaw, and I think that’s how they kind of get that nice, sort of sharp definition. Is that what you did as well?
Dr Jayson Oates: Yeah. Yeah, so in the end that’s really what everybody’s looking for, is that nice, straight, well-defined jawline. And yeah, it’s been really surprising and gratifying how well the Ultraformer has performed there.
Trish Hammond: Yeah. I’m totally sold on it. So what excites me as well is, I’d love to start to see some more of the body stuff, because if it works, you know, so well, you know, around there, why wouldn’t it work on other parts of the body, like, you know?
Dr Jayson Oates: Indeed. So areas of the body that we’re starting to trial it on is the upper arms, sort of the inner arm. ‘Cause sometimes you have women that don’t have a lot of fat, but they’ve got that crinkly skin there that they hate. Same for, well, you know, the tummies, above the knees, so there’s a number of sort of areas where, yeah, you just want that little bit of tightening in the skin, but you don’t necessarily want to have a surgical scar.
Trish Hammond: It sounds like I’m gonna have to get myself one for home, and do the laser.
Dr Jayson Oates: Sit there and watch TV, and just gradually zap-
Trish Hammond: I wish. I wish. Well no, it sounds great, and the other thing I was gonna ask you is, I know that there’s a couple of devices out there on the market, and … But I do know that the Cryomed team provide exceptional service and training, and you can kind of be sure if someone’s using an Ultraformer, and they’ve been trained up, you’re gonna be getting a quality treatment as well.
Can you tell us a bit about the training that you get with it as well?
Dr Jayson Oates: Yeah, so that went really good. Our dermal therapists are already highly trained and experienced, and, you know, have been with us for a decade or more. But when you’re introducing a new technology, you wanna make sure that they’re brought up to speed on the new technology as well, and that was really good. But yeah, they came in, you know, spent a few days. We treated a whole bunch of people, and yeah, they just took to it really, really well, and I think that’s one of the reasons why the Ultraformer has done so well around the country, is that they’ve made sure that the people who are getting the technology know how to use it and can do it well. ‘Cause that’s really good for all of us, you know, we all want good reports sort of going out there for the technology, so when people, start, you know, Googling it and hunting it, for it, that they’re hearing good things about it.
Trish Hammond: Exactly, you wanna have the support, you wanna make sure, number one, that you’ve trained properly, and number two, you wanna have the support, because, you know, there might be a patient where you might wanna, you know, like, oh, is it okay to inject it in this patient, they’ve just had this, or whatever.
And you can be sure of knowing that, you know, what you’re … who you’re treating it’s okay for, and also the treatment that you’re doing on them is going to be the right treatment for them as well.
Dr Jayson Oates: Yeah, exactly.
Trish Hammond: Well that’s great. Well that’s been awesome, so thank you so much for taking the time today. So what … Oh, one last question. Can you tell us a little bit about the downtime?
Dr Jayson Oates: Really, very little in the way of downtime, you know. I had the treatment, went straight back to work. So yeah, some people will be a bit red, and if your skin has that really flushing tendency, and if you’re concerned about people, you know, knowing that you’ve had something done, then yeah, you may not want everybody seeing you for the next day. But yeah, a lot of our patients, you know, are a little bit pink, but there’s nothing really that worries them. The skin isn’t broken, and so there’s no crusting or healing sort of time, so really very little in the way of downtime.
Trish Hammond: That’s the same with me, I didn’t have any downtime whatsoever, except, I think I mentioned to you that the day after, I’d had some fillers done in my jaw at some point, which was a big mistake cause it was kinda to fill up the jowls which was just like, I don’t know why I’d do that, but anyway, someone suggested it. And I just found that I’d got a little lump on each side, because, you know, fillers are contraindicated. But that … And I was like, oh my god what’s happened, am I gonna be left like this. But seriously by the time … the end of the day, or even the next day, I can’t remember, you didn’t even know. So it was only a temporary thing. And that’s because I hadn’t actually told them that I’d had fillers in my jaw, so it’s my fault anyway. But yeah, no downtime, I had no, you know, no side effects whatsoever apart from that one day of like, little lump on each side where I had my filler that … My filler regret, I call it.
Dr Jayson Oates: Well. Good to speak to you Trish.
Trish Hammond: Yeah you too. You too.
Dr Jayson Oates: And hope you have a merry Christmas.
Trish Hammond: Yeah, thank you, same to you, and thank you so much for taking the time, ’cause I know this is take two, we had a bit of a technical glitch last time, but thanks so much for coming back on.
Dr Jayson Oates: No, that’s great. Wonderful speaking to you.
Trish Hammond: Thanks Dr. Oates, you too. Have a great Christmas as well.
Dr Jayson Oates: I will, thanks, bye.
Trish Hammond: We’ll talk to you next time. Thank you, bye.
