Emily shares her story with us about her aesthetic treatments in the lead up to her wedding. She saw Dr William Mooney from FacePlus Medispa in Bondi Junction and she says it’s the best thing she’s ever done.
I had always disliked the size and shape of my nose since about the age of 15. The tip of my nose was bulbous and asymmetrical and the bump on the bridge also really bothered me. I was always extremely self-conscious about the way it looked and this affected my self-esteem on a daily basis, especially when I was having photos taken. I was 27 when I decided to have rhino/septoplasty with Dr William Mooney and it was honestly the best decision I have ever made.
My new nose looks so natural and suits my facial features so well that it looks like I was born with it. Rhinoplasty was something I had always wanted to undergo, particularly because I was getting married and wanted to look and feel great on the day, especially in all the profile wedding pictures.
During my early 20s I had also suffered from cystic acne on my lower face which left me with scarring and discolouration. Leading up to my wedding in August 2016 I was on a specific treatment program at FacePlus Medispa to improve my skin texture, scarring and give my skin an overall healthy glow for the wedding day. I also had muscle relaxants in my frown line and forehead to prevent fine lines appearing, as well as hyaluronic acid filler in my lips and cheeks to further balance my facial proportions.
My New Nose
I had two appointments prior to undergoing rhinoplasty with Dr Mooney; the initial consultation, and the pre-operative appointment. During the initial consultation Dr Mooney was able to guide me through what was involved in the surgery and what to expect. Dr Mooney also performed breathing tests which measured the function of my nasal airway. He used imaging software to alter the cosmetic appearance of my nose. This allowed me to see a realistic example of how my nose would look post operatively. Being able to visualise how my nose may look was probably the most exciting part of the consult for me. Finally, I was given a quote for the procedure with all the relevant information I needed to proceed.
The pre-operative appointment was booked approximately two weeks prior to my scheduled surgery date. During this appointment I was given all the pre/post surgery information including how to care for myself post operatively. The information I was given exceeded my expectations, both Dr Mooney and the nurses were extremely thorough and explained everything in great depth, so I felt as prepared as I possibly could be with peace of mind leading into the surgery.
I had open rhino/septoplasty with Dr Mooney which involves a small incision made on the columella (which generally heals well and is almost invisible). Dr Mooney was able to remove the bump on the bridge of my nose and create a ‘diamond tip’ which he is renowned for. During this process he was able to remove the excess cartilage on the tip of my nose (which made it look bulbous) as well as lifting the angle of the nose slightly so it didn’t appear ‘droopy’. The surgery was completed under a general anaesthetic and I stayed overnight in the hospital for my own comfort and care. I woke up feeling a little spacey after the anaesthetic, however I didn’t experience any strong pain as everything felt quite numb. The nurses at the hospital supplied me with ice to help reduce swelling and I was discharged the day after the surgery.
During the two week recovery I spent most of the time resting upright and following all of the medication/ home care instructions given to me by Dr Mooney’s nurse. Five days post surgery I had the cast and internal splints removed by Dr Mooney’s post operative nurse (which to my surprise wasn’t as bad as I’d imagined). I was also shown specific massage techniques to help reduce facial swelling. It was probably one of the happiest days of my life (apart from the wedding day) to see my new nose! I was overwhelmed by how fantastic is looked. Even though I was so swollen still, I could visualise how it was going to look once the swelling had come down.
Day 10 post surgery I had the sutures removed from the incision line and was shown further techniques to reduce tip swelling. All the specific post care instructions given to me by Dr Mooney’s nurse were fantastic as they really fast tracked my healing and recovery. After each post operative appointment I also had an LED light therapy treatment, which helped immensely to heal the bruising and swelling. In the third week post surgery I had an enzyme facial peel with the post operative nurse which helped to remove dry flaky skin and rehydrate my skin post anaesthetic and post-cast. I was back to work at day 14 and felt completely fine. All bruising and swelling had also dissipated.
The entire process went extremely smoothly from the moment I met Dr Mooney. I did not experience any complications and it really wasn’t as scary as I thought it was going to be. Dr Mooney and his team looked after me every step of the way. I had done so much research prior to booking surgery and after reading that Dr Mooney performs the most rhinoplasty cases out of any other surgeon in Australia, I knew he was the right surgeon for me. He listened to my concerns and created a nose that really suited me and my facial features and structure. The surgery was the best thing I have ever done.
I was really nervous leading up to surgery, mainly because I was worried that I was going to be in a lot of pain post surgery. However it was nowhere near as bad as I had imagined. I was provided with the appropriate analgesic medication at my pre-operative appointment, so this kept the pain at bay. I also did not experience any postoperative nausea and vomiting, nor did I suffer from headaches. I did feel mentally prepared for the surgery, so I think that made the recovery a lot easier. The only discomfort I had was not being able to breathe properly through my nose due to swelling and congestion. I therefore had to mainly breathe through my mouth for the first week, which was strange for me, especially whilst sleeping. I kept myself hydrated whilst mouth breathing the first 6 days by drinking lots of water and applying lip-balm frequently.
Preparation and patience is definitely the key to a positive outcome for this surgery. Dr Mooney’s office gave me lots of tips in preparing myself and my home for the surgery. I bought some really comfy European pillows for my bed which propped me up while sleeping at a 45 degree angle. I was also told to have lots of meals prepared in the fridge so I didn’t have to worry about cooking post surgery. I made sure I was eating lots of protein and vegetables leading up to surgery and during recovery which helped considerably with the healing process. I also mentally prepared myself for the operation and went in with realistic expectations and a positive attitude.
Dr William Mooney’s Professionalism and Expertise
Dr Mooney & his post op nurses looked after me throughout my entire surgical journey. He took the time to listen to my concerns and coached me through the whole rhinoplasty journey. His professionalism and expertise is what made the whole experience a breeze. Since I had my rhinoplasty I have had 6 of my close friends/family book with Dr Mooney. I highly recommend him to anyone considering rhinoplasty surgery. Dr Mooney’ post-operative nursing team were also fantastic. They were very kind and friendly whilst also being very professional and providing me with all the necessary information. They were also available after hours if I had any concerns after my surgery.
Emily’s Advice for Other Rhinoplasty Patients
After rhinoplasty it is important to take at least two weeks off work to let your body heal and recover. This is also a good amount of time to have off as the majority of bruising and swelling takes around two weeks to subside. For most patients it takes up to one year to see the very final result from surgery. I ensured I had plenty of time between my surgery and wedding day. Yet in saying that, I was extremely happy with how my nose looked even 1 months post operatively. From 6-12 months there were only very minor changes that occurred. In the later stages the tip softened a little more and the tip swelling completely subsided. By my wedding day it was perfect.
As cliché as it sounds, I couldn’t be happier! It has honestly changed my life in the way that I now look and feel about myself. I have found a new level of confidence that I never used to have. My nose looks even better than the altered images that Dr Mooney had completed for me. The tip is now so much better and it looks and feels so natural. I am truly so happy with the results!
I am still continuing to alternate between Laser Genesis skin treatments and phyto skin peels monthly. Not only have the treatments helped to reduce scarring and redness, but my skin texture is now so smooth, plump and hydrated. By far the best treatments I have ever had. It is very apparent in my before and after pictures how much healthier my skin looks.
My husband, mum and friends were surprisingly really supportive about the whole procedure. They knew how much my nose bothered me and effected my self-esteem. After my consultation with Dr Mooney and his team (in which they explained the whole process), they were just as excited for me as I was to have the surgery!
We agree that Emily looks absolutely fantastic. We bet her husband was in absolute awe of his beautiful bride as she walked down the aisle! Thanks for sharing your story Emily!
