I want to revisit the revolutionary Mona Lisa Touch treatment that is helping thousands of women regain control. I initially wrote about the Mona Lisa Touch in August 2015 when I had the treatment myself. It’s a bit scary putting that sort of information out there for everyone, but so many women are affected by these issues at some point in their life and we’re committed to encouraging and normalising open dialogue about any service that can offer someone a better quality of life. So I thought I’d cover again how to regain control of your vaginal atrophy with MonaLisa Touch.
Vaginal Atrophy – What is it?
Put simply, vaginal atrophy is the natural drying and thinning of the tissues and membranes of the vagina. According to a study by the American Association of Family Physicians, more than 40% of postmenopausal women suffer from vaginal atrophy. Although commonly encountered leading up to and following menopause as a natural part of the ageing process, vaginal atrophy may also happen following pregnancy and breastfeeding, as a result of chemotherapy, or in a number of other circumstances, and is caused by changing hormone levels leading to a lack of oestrogen production.
While the symptoms can vary from case to case, frequent issues can include:
- Thinning of the vaginal walls
- Burning and inflammation
- Discomfort or pain during sex
- Pain or burning during urination
- Frequent urinary tract infections
For a long time, the only option available to women was the use of topical oestrogen tablets or creams that were applied into the vagina every few days. The problem with this treatment is that once the treatment stops the benefits are lost quite quickly. In addition many women don’t like the feeling of the application process and stop using the creams, some women don’t respond and other women who have had certain types of cancer were unable to use the treatment.
How does the Mona Lisa Touch work?
Mona Lisa Touch works by using a laser to target the water in the tissue and deposit small dots of heat a fraction of a millimetre wide into the affected tissue. The treatment is relatively painless and if you can tolerate a pap smear you will find MonaLisa Touch to be a breeze.
The procedure uses a ‘RF-excited’ fractional CO2 laser that is different to other fractional CO2 lasers because it has a unique laser pulse that is specifically suited to the vaginal mucosa. It creates a small amount of surface ablation followed by lower energy delivery of heat that causes the regeneration. This maximises the regeneration while minimising the healing time. The dots of heat stimulate ‘heat-shock’ proteins in the tissues of the vagina that leads to a cascade of regeneration, promoting production of collagen and elastin, strengthening and rejuvenating the tissue and improving the underlying blood vessels to improve nutrient delivery and hydration.
The biggest advantages are the ease and speed with which the procedure is performed and that the improvements that are stimulated will last 12 to 18 months. Unlike other laser treatments, which can take up to half an hour and require multiple passes, the Mona Lisa Touch process is completed in a single pass and takes less than five minutes. As well as being a more comfortable, convenient and dignified it also makes the treatment safer by eliminating the chance of over-treatment of the tissue. MonaLisa Touch is well researched with over 20 published research papers by leading experts around the world and over 40,000 treatments have now been performed in Australia.
Restoring The Intimacy In Your Life
The most notable result reported by most women who have undergone treatment with the Mona Lisa Touch, is a huge improvement in libido and overall sex life. Many of the symptoms of vaginal atrophy, such as soreness, inflammation and discharge can leave you feeling less than appealing, with many women finding sexual activity outright painful. By physically renewing and rejuvenating the tissue of the vagina, the MonaLisa Touch treatment is offering a new lease on life for women and their partners.
