Growing up in Beaumaris, Valence always thought he would follow his father’s footsteps into the dental world. One of the top students of his year, he graduated with first class honours in 2004 (University of Melbourne). One of only a few students to have his work published, Valence was offered several scholarships throughout his studies.
Valence started working as a cosmetic dentist while working with renowned cosmetic dentist Dr Jeremy Norris in Noosa. However, it was one particular case that he came across early in his dental career that sparked his passion for cosmetic dentistry. Valence elaborates, “David, a 38 year old father of 3, had hated his smile for years. By the time I saw him as a patient, David was so embarrassed about the twist in his teeth and the discolouration that he avoided smiling in public and would not be seen in photos. However, at the end of his treatment with me, David left the clinic feeling confident and happy like he had not felt in years. I was overawed by the impact such a simple procedure could have for one person, and even more surprised by the number of people who came to see me for help after seeing David’s results.”
We always want to ask our Cosmetic Dentists about their life outside their career. Whilst so many of them are deeply immersed in their work lives, we often find out more about a person by what they do in their down time. A hopeless romantic, most patients do not know that Dr Valence Roberts is also a wedding celebrant. Other than officiating weddings, Valence tells us he also enjoys surfing, kite surfing, snowboarding and spending time with his young family.
The exciting thing about cosmetic dentistry is that there are so many options available nowadays. Valence works closely with the Victorian Cosmetic Institute to ensure that smiles are balanced and lips, gums and teeth all work together in harmony. His favourite procedure is teeth straightening using invisalign™ While many teeth straightening options are available on the market, for those cases suited to invisalgn™ patients are able to reposition their natural teeth into a straighter smile they can love without anyone even noticing they are wearing retainers. Valence says, “If we’re able to maintain natural or ‘un-veneered’ teeth it’s a better option as we’re not taking away healthy tooth material, and, the added bonus is that it’s usually a lot more cost effective”.
From implants to teeth-straightening, veneers, gum lifts or whitening, it’s clear that cosmetic dentistry is now considered an integral part of any makeover. Valence and his team provide post-operative care and commit to being available on call as you need them, and encourage continued general dental health so that you keep a healthy smile for years to come.
