There are several non-surgical procedures and treatments that can get rid of dry, old skin (always more of a problem after winter!), some of them more effective and popular than others. How do you know which one is right for you? To start with you need to make sure your clinic or practitioner has the right training and experience, and is suitably skilled to give you the right advice. Dr Gavin Sandercoe, Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeon, offers several of these treatments at his skin clinic in Bella Vista NSW and chatted to us about which ones are most popular at this time of the year to get your skin ready for summer.

Chemical Peels

Peels are amazing to get rid of the outer layer of dead skin that builds up over time and gives your skin a more youthful appearance. Dr Sandercoe says,Chemical Peels stimulate faster cell turn-over, pushing healthier layers of skin to the surface while the older skin cells are shed. This results in a more youthful appearance to the skin. There are three types of chemical peels we offer: Lactobotanical Peels (Lactic Acid) – this peel has particular advantages over glycolic acid peels, including less irritation and is more effective at treating mild acne, congestion, dull and lifeless skin and dehydration; Salicylic Acid Peels – This intensive peel works on the deeper layers and is used to treat hyperpigmentation, acne and aging skin; Retinol Brulee Peel (Vitamin A) – This medical-strength skin resurfacing treatment tackles fine lines, wrinkles, dull and weathered skin texture, visible pores and minor skin discolouration.”

Lasers deal with a multitude of skin conditions and issues and are one of the best methods of skin resurfacing and rejuvenation. Dr Sandercoe says they offer several different laser options at their non-surgical clinic. “Limelight Skin Rejuvenation – This non-invasive facial focuses on improving skin tone and surface imperfections associated with ageing and photodamage. We also offer advanced laser technology for veins – we can deal with both tiny facial veins and deeper blue leg veins on all skin tones with a minimum of fuss and effort. We also offer the extremely popular Laser Genesis which targets the visible effects of ageing, such as wrinkles, pore size, skin texture, redness and scarring, on all areas of the body.”

Skin Needling

Dermal needling, or skin needling, is also a great option to improve your skin texture and renew your skin. It works by creating tiny perforations in your skin and triggering your cells into regenerative mode, repairing your skin at a cellular level. Dr Sandercoe says skin needling will improve your skin texture, smooth wrinkles and fine lines and plump up your skin with increased collagen production. Perfect to give your skin a glow in time for looking great in the social Spring and Summer months.

Epidermal Levelling

Epidermal levelling is the latest insight into utilising enhanced exfoliation of the skin with no pain or downtime involved and is suitable for all Fitzpatrick skin types. This extremely safe and gentle method of exfoliation uses a specially designed surgical instrument to carefully remove the outer layers of dead skin cells, known as the stratum corneum, as well as any fine hairs, also known as vellus hairs or ‘peach fuzz’. This treatment will leave the skin smooth by improving the texture of the skin, whilst also promoting a rejuvenated look, flawless makeup application and will enhance results of other skin treatments such as peels and anti-wrinkle injections!

Many of these procedures provide instant results but can also improve over the weeks following the treatments. Dr Sandercoe says, “A tailored treatment plan can be designed by our experienced therapist that uses a combination of more than one of these treatments together to give you the most optimum results. Now is the time to start thinking about having one or more of these treatments so you’re ready for the Spring Racing Carnivals and Spring Flings.”
