All women at some stage of their life go through menopause. It’s inevitable and the symptoms for some women can be quite significant. Some of the symptoms are transient and will pass with time. However, another set of symptoms called genito-urinary syndrome of menopause (also known as GSM or vaginal atrophy) will appear three to four years after menopause and continue to get worse with time if not treated. While menopause is the main time women will experience these symptoms, in fact this is an issue that many women can face even before they hit menopause. It is a common problem with women undergoing treatment for certain types of cancer and it can be an issue post-pregnancy when hormones are fluctuating. The good news is there is a simple and easy solution for this often embarrassing problem.

MonaLisa Touch is a revolutionary new treatment that is helping women across the globe. The Medici Clinic in Berwick (part of Cosmetic Surgery for Women in Melbourne) offer the MonaLisa Touch vaginal laser treatment, and we asked them how it works and who it can help.

Symptoms Of GSM (Vaginal Atrophy)

MonaLisa TouchSome of the symptoms MonaLisa Touch can improve are the general symptoms of GSM (vaginal atrophy), stress incontinence or bladder leakage. These include:

  • Vaginal or vulvar dryness
  • Vaginal itching
  • Painful intercourse
  • Leaking urine when you laugh, dance, cough, exercise or move too quickly
  • Recurring urinary tract infections or thrush
  • Reduced sexual satisfaction – pain during sex or a loose vaginal skin or a lax vagina

The MonaLisa Touch treatment is relatively comfortable, fast and effective for vaginal skin regeneration. It can help tighten vaginal skin, increase skin elasticity and lubrication and improve vaginal comfort.

The actual Monalisa Touch treatment only takes around 5 to 10 minutes with a typical treatment appointment lasting no longer than 15 to 20 minutes in total (The Medici Clinic tell us your initial consultation and history taking appointment may take a bit longer, but usually under one hour).

MonaLisa TouchMonaLisa Touch can help with any or all of these symptoms and issues and the Medici Clinic staff have noted, “patients have reported great vaginal comfort after having a series of MonaLisa Touch treatments; including noting improved vaginal lubrication, firmer vaginal skin and rejuvenated labial skin, experiencing less pain during sex and noting an increased libido and improved sex life. Patients also report having less urgency in terms of minor incontinence – in other words, less leakage or less urgency in needing to visit the toilet – especially at night. The treatment is also shown to result in fewer urinary infections and thrush and reduced need for using HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) creams.”

Mona Lisa can actually restore the natural PH levels of good bacteria in your vagina which helps to reduce any recurring urinary tract infections or thrush. For women who’ve had this particular issue, they will know what a relief it is not having to deal with it.

The Medici Clinic in Berwick offers free 15 minute phone consultations to identify if you might be suitable for the MonaLisa Touch treatment – phone (03) 8849 1444 to schedule your free call. The treatment is offered as a stand alone treatment for vaginal revitalisation, however the Medici Clinic say, “It is also a useful addition to a “Mummy Makeover” surgery, such as a breast augmentation, breast lift or breast reduction with body contouring using abdominoplasty, which is popular after pregnancy or menopause to help women get their body contours back to where they want them to be.”

The MonaLisa Touch Procedure

Treatment results are usually seen after just one treatment. But Medici Clinic staff say that three short treatments, at approximately 4-6 week intervals, are usually required to gain the full effects of these treatments. They also suggest you may wish to have a follow up treatment around twelve to eighteen months after your first treatment, as the natural ageing process continues. These “maintenance” treatments help sustain the effects of the treatment over a longer period of time. The actual procedure itself is typically painless and no anaesthesia is required. There is occasionally a bit of discomfort when the treatment is used around the outer area of the vagina (the labial area) but the effects are positive in that it tightens and revitalises the skin. There are minimal side effects or risks, and it can even be done in your lunchtime (you can return to normal activities immediately except you might not want to work out right away – ask your Clinician for details).

MonaLisa TouchThe Mona Lisa Touch is a CO2 fractional laser that puts tiny dots of laser energy evenly spaced over about 7% of the wall of the vagina. The MonaLisa Touch laser is targeting the water in the skin a unique laser pulse emission, called Deka pulse, allows it to deliver heat deep into the skin with very little disruption to the surface of the skin. The heat stimulates ‘heat-shock proteins’ which trigger a cascade of regeneration that stimulates the creation of new, healthy tissue, elastic and collagen. The results are improved blood flow, and a much healthier vaginal wall including elasticity.

Research trials and patient reports have shown dramatically improve quality of life for women with some patients saying their results from the Mona Lisa Touch have been life changing. The only preparation required is that you should have had a PAP smear in the 12 months before the treatment showing no abnormalities. (We think it might be a good prompt to get a pap smear and then arrange the treatment!).

Medici and Cosmetic Surgery for Women staff say, “Our female health & post-pregnancy health and menopausal health GP is Dr Loretto Maxwell.
