Peeing yourself. It’s not the most glamorous dinner table talk, sure, but it’s nothing to be embarrassed about. In fact, it’s surprisingly common. According to National Association for Continence (NAFC) in America, over 200 million people worldwide are affected by incontinence1, with over 5 million Australians also affected by the condition2. Women make up 80% of people affected, with childbirth and menopause being the most common causes for stress incontinence.

Wembley Downs clinic Ocean Cosmetics is the first clinic in WA to bring this technology to the west coast, after Clinic Director Dr. Gina Messiha experienced the BTL Emsella at the 2019 ASAPS Non-surgical Symposium in Sydney.

“Stress incontinence is an uncomfortable condition that affects so many people. Being able to offer them relief, as well as the confidence to laugh, sneeze, jump without worrying about having an accident, is really special,” Dr. Messiha said.

“The treatment is non-invasive, painless and has no downtime, with patients sitting fully clothed on the chair while the Emsella gets to work. Many patients are experiencing improvement after a single session, with the full results typically continuing to improve over the next few weeks.”

BTL Emsella, also known as the ‘Kegel Throne’, uses high-intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) energy to stimulate deep pelvic floor muscle spasms, known as super maximal contractions. The repetitive stimulation leads to regained control over pelvic floor muscles and bladder to reduce the severity of stress urinary incontinence.

Mum-of-one Flavia Harris, 37, was a Kegel Throne convert after just one session with Dr. Gina.
“Like so many mums, I’ve suffered with the dreaded condition since having my first child,” said Ms. Harris.  “It’s not pleasant to have to constantly worry that playing with my son or sneezing is going to have embarrassing consequences.”
“The Emsella treatment just felt like a dedicated pelvic-floor workout – the sensation was hard to describe but it was a very comfortable treatment that I could do fully clothed. I’m very excited to complete my course of treatments and regain the confidence I’ve lost since childbirth.”

After completing her six treatments, we spoke to Flavia again and here’s what she had to say:

Kegel ThroneQ. What changes or improvements have you noticed since starting your Emsella treatments?
A: Life. Changing!! I can cough, sneeze and jump on a trampoline even with zero issues! I’m also completely sleeping through the night now, whereas before I found myself getting up multiple times during the night to go to the toilet.
Q. What can you do now that you couldn’t do before the treatments?
A. I don’t even need to consider what I can and can’t do physically anymore. I just get on with playing with my little one with zero fear of peeing myself!
Q. What would you say to any other women, in particular mums, out there who are silently going through stress incontinence?
A. It’s absolutely nothing to be embarrassed about!
The more we all talk about it, the more we’ll all see that most of us are dealing with the exact same problem! It’s not something taboo, it’s something that’s not our ‘fault’, it’s not something we have control over. There’s no need to just put up with it anymore, now it can be fixed.
