Chin Liposuction goes along with neck liposuction. Chin and neck liposuction is a minimally invasive surgical procedure to shape the neckline by eradicating the excess fat below the chin.
Since the chin and neck are prone to store excessive fat, especially as we gain weight and age, chin liposuction offers some promising benefits such as refinement of the jawline and the enhancement of the neckline and silhouette.
Chin liposuction can be done through traditional surgery or by laser.
1. Traditional surgery procedure – A two to four centimetres long incisions are created in the chin and beneath the ears. An intra-oral (an incision made inside the mouth) is sometimes performed by skilful surgeons. Prior to making an incision, a local anaesthesia is first infiltrated in the neck. A micro-tube is inserted through the ports to suction out the fat, and this suctioning of fat should take 30 minutes to perform. After this procedure, a pad will be placed underneath the chin. After which your head and neck will be wrapped with an elastic bandage. The elastic is then removed the following day, but an elastic garment is still to be worn for two weeks until the drainage resolves.
2. Laser Procedure – This is a relatively new technique to perform chin liposuction. A probe is utilized as well and instead of using a liposuction cannula as used in the traditional surgery, a laser is used. This laser procedure would not do a suction process. This laser method will use light energy to annihilate the fat cells. The laser light also helps prevent baggy skin around the chin and neck as it tightens the surrounding skin around those areas.
Risks & Complications
These complications are rare and may only be temporary, however they may include:
- Puckering of skin
- Nerve damage or temporal paralysis of the marginal mandibular nerve
- Asymmetry
- Unsatisfactory results especially when you are not a good candidate for a chin liposuction (those with mediocre skin elasticity, loss of depth, lax muscles, youthful angularity, with extra skin)
- Numbness around the jaw and mouth
- Bruising
- Tethering of skin
- Fibrosis
- Hematomas
- Sagging of skin
Q. How long does the chin liposuction procedure last?
A. It would only take about an hour.
Q. Is it painful?
A. An anaesthetic is used so there should be no pain. However, some may feel a bit of discomfort but it depends on the pain tolerance of each patient.
Q. Who is a good candidate for a chin liposuction?
A. This procedure is good for both men and women having excess fat under the chin known as “double chin.” Also, a good candidate for this procedure should still have a good skin elasticity and muscle tone, more likely those under the age of 30 are mostly good candidates. Otherwise, older people who have lost their skin’s elasticity, having lax muscles and extra skin may need to go under a neck lift or face-lift.
Q. How big is the chance of having a sagging skin after a chin liposuction?
A. Taking care of the skin is a big factor in preventing a sagging skin. Normally, one is asked to wear a medical facial garment such as a chinstrap day and night for one to two weeks that should make the skin become firm.
Q. When will I see results?
A. Results can be seen right away after the procedure, or after the bandage is removed.
