Facial Pigmentation

Excessive skin pigmentation is a result of the overproduction of melanin. This excessive pigmentation can have a number of causes including excessive sun exposure, hormones, skin trauma and congenital conditions.

This unsightly pigmentation can now be treated effectively with lasers. The type of treatment used will be dependent on the type of pigmentation. Different lasers are used for different types of skin pigmentation and skin types.

Intense Pulsed Laser (IPL) technology works by a laser targeting cells and causing damage to the area. This damage promotes a wound-healing response in the skin, without a major tissue build-up. After treatment, the skin begins to rapidly produce new skin cells which replace old and damaged areas of skin.

C02 Lasers can provide dramatic improvements for sunspots and offer long-lasting results with the least amount of treatment. The intensity of the laser is adjusted on an individual basis and thus offers the practitioner a wide range of flexibility in minimising the appearance of sun damage on the skin.

Fractional Laser uses pinpoint, computer-guided precision to create microchannels in the skin. This initiates the body’s healing response by stimulating new collagen and elastin production, while the surrounding skin remains intact for rapid healing. Fraxel laser offers a less invasive wrinkle reduction treatment, while also targeting scars and discolouration; giving you fresher, more evenly coloured skin.

Laser facial rejuvenation is clinic procedure. You may have sections treated individually or treat your entire face and chest. For some areas, you may be numbed on the areas with a local anaesthetic cream.

Treating sections of the face takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes. A full-face treatment can take up to two hours. Swelling after laser skin resurfacing is normal. Sleeping on an extra pillow at night can ease this swelling.

Each treatment varies, so you will need to discuss with your laser practitioner as to how long your recovery (downtime) is. Depending on the type of laser used and the amount of treatment you have had will influence the recovery period greatly. As a guideline, you can expect all facial skin to be recovered within a week to ten days.

Risks and Complications

Potential risks of laser rejuvenation procedure include:

  • Burns or other injuries from the laser’s heat
  • Scarring
  • Changes in the skin’s pigmentation, including areas of darker or lighter skin
  • Reactivating herpes cold sores
  • Bacterial infection
Laser Skin Treatments – Results you can see straight away November 15, 2018 - There is a myriad of skin treatments on the market but one that patients still love for it’s instant and obvious results is laser. While laser got a bad rap for a little while there with reports of burning among other side effects, that generally only happens with unqualified practitioners using unapproved devices in dodgy clinics. Laser performed by qualified practitioners is one of the most effective ways to treat a variety of skin conditions and for skin rejuvenation and clinics such as FacePlus Medispa in Sydney say laser is one of their most popular non-surgical treatments. They chatted to us about what laser can treat and shared some of their patient before and afters. Laser Genesis Not all lasers are considered equal, and FacePlus Medispa use one of our favourites, the Laser Genesis by Cutera. One of the things that makes the Laser Genesis stand out is its ability to tailor the treatment for the patient. There are different settings to treat different skin conditions for different patients, and the highly trained practitioners at FacePlus Medispa have years of experience to be able to ensure you receive the right treatment for you. Example, Laser Genesis can treat a variety […]
Get your skin beautiful and ready for summer! September 20, 2018 - There are several non-surgical procedures and treatments that can get rid of dry, old skin (always more of a problem after winter!), some of them more effective and popular than others. How do you know which one is right for you? To start with you need to make sure your clinic or practitioner has the right training and experience, and is suitably skilled to give you the right advice. Dr Gavin Sandercoe, Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeon, offers several of these treatments at his skin clinic in Bella Vista NSW and chatted to us about which ones are most popular at this time of the year to get your skin ready for summer. Chemical Peels Peels are amazing to get rid of the outer layer of dead skin that builds up over time and gives your skin a more youthful appearance. Dr Sandercoe says, “Chemical Peels stimulate faster cell turn-over, pushing healthier layers of skin to the surface while the older skin cells are shed. This results in a more youthful appearance to the skin. There are three types of chemical peels we offer: Lactobotanical Peels (Lactic Acid) – this peel has particular advantages over glycolic acid peels, including less irritation […]
Treat a range of Skin Issues with IPL and Laser May 29, 2018 - As we move into the cooler weather, it’s a great time to start thinking about treating any skin conditions such as rosacea, veins, pigmentation, sun damage and a range of other skin issues with laser and IPL, as your exposure to the sun is minimised and you will get the best results. Dr Graham Sellars, Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeon from The San Clinic in Wahroonga, Sydney, says winter is the most popular time of the year for laser and IPL treatments and we chatted with Nurse Michelle from his clinic about the skin issues they can treat with laser and IPL. Both laser and IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatments are able to treat similar skin issues including: Sun damage Acne Pigmentation Rosacea Ageing spots Benign lesions eg moles Blemishes Freckles Fine lines and wrinkles Broken capillaries The difference between IPL and laser IPL uses specific wavelengths of light that penetrate the skin at varying depths to target different skin issues. The IPL is attracted to the chromophores which are the pigments eg brown in pigmentation and red from the haemoglobin in the capillaries of the skin. The light targets and breaks down the skin imperfections allowing the body to remove […]

Winter Surgery Why Winter is a Good Time for Surgery April 20, 2017 - All surgery involves some recovery time and plastic surgery is no different. While summer is a great time to show off your body, winter can be your best friend, giving you the perfect reason to cover up as you recover from your surgery. Whether you want a facelift, a tummy tuck, liposuction, bigger breasts or any other plastic surgery, Dr Mark McGovern from VIE Institute on the Sunshine Coast says that winter is the ideal time for your surgery. Reduces risks of infection Infection is a possible side effect of all surgical procedures. Surgery performed in the summer months tend to have higher rates of postoperative infection. Dr McGovern says that this is generally attributed to the hot and often moist environment under tapes, dressings and/or garments. “Not only do you reduce this risk, but it is more comfortable wearing dressing and or garments in the cooler months”. Perfect excuse to cover up It is normal to experience swelling and bruising after any surgery. While bruising fades after 10 days, swelling can take a month to really subside. “The extra layers worn in the cooler months are perfect for disguising any swelling and in particular, any dressing or garments you […]
Fraxel Laser Scar Minimisation with Coco Ruby Skin Clinic February 23, 2017 - Scarring is an inevitable part of having surgery, and is often the one thing that people who decide to have surgery often worry about. Apart from ensuring that you get a highly-qualified Surgeon who focuses on precision incision techniques and proper scar management, there are other technologies that can help minimise scars. Fraxel Laser is one of many technologies for scar reduction for some patients, and Coco Ruby Skin Clinic in Hawthorn and Berwick (VIC) offers this state-of-the-art scar-removal treatment. How FRAXEL laser treatments can help reduce scars after surgery Fraxel laser works by targeting the skin areas that were penetrated by surgical incisions or otherwise underwent dermal changes that resulted in the formation of a scar. Using a patented fractional laser technology, only a small area of the skin tissues are treated at a time. The surrounding skin remains unaffected and intact. The deep penetration of this laser treatment promotes rapid healing, which occurs faster than if the entire skin is treated at once. Collagen production is triggered to encourage the growth of new and healthy skin. Repeated treatments will lead to healthier and renewed skin. Benefits of Fraxel Laser treatments include both scar minimisation AND skin rejuvenation: Removes […]

A lot younger? As we age, our skin is exposed to various kinds of radicals in the environment, not to mention the kind of activities we engage in and the lifestyles we have. Constant and extended exposure to the sun and the pollution in the environment and everyday stress can really show up in the skin in due time, especially in the face; making the skin look dull with dark spots, the skin becomes oily, and the pores look visibly large. Thanks to the new and advanced innovations in aesthetic treatments, achieving that youthful look is just a laser away with the introduction of Laser Genesis. ExcelV Veins, Skin Issues? We may have the solution… September 21, 2016 - Veins are something many of us have, but until now there hasn’t really been an effective way to deal with them. The Excel V is a treatment we’ve told you about before but in the lead up to another hot Australian summer where we start baring our bodies, we thought now was a great time to start looking at it again. The exciting thing about Excel V is that it also deals with a variety of other skin conditions, including acne. We wanted to get an expert opinion on the Excel V and why it has such a great reputation as the go-to laser. Dr Sean Arendse from Flawless Rejuvenation in Melbourne has the Excel V in his clinic and was kind enough to answer some questions for us. PSH: Excel V is used to treat veins. Does it work on all types of veins, ie. spider veins, reticular veins etc. and does it vary from patient to patient? Dr Sean: The Excel V is Excellent in treating most types of veins with consistent results, safely and across most skin types. The 532 wavelength is excellent at dealing with facial telangiectasia, and the 1064 wavelength laser is great with spider […]

Skin treatments at North Coast Medispa What Skin Treatments For Me? Fillers, Peels? IPL? Dr Gudmundsen from North Coast Medispa, gives us the lowdown. June 22, 2016 - Do you find yourself being confused with all the offerings and options out there for skin care, treatment and rejuvenation? Wonder what would be best for you? Dr Gudmundsen, Dermatologist, is the ONLY AHPRA approved skin specialist in the North Coast / Northern Rivers region. We caught up with him at North Coast Medispa for the lowdown. PSH: Do different treatments suit different skin types? Ie. are fillers suitable for all skin types, or can everyone have a chemical skin peel, or Intense Pulse Light or laser therapy? Additionally, Is there a danger of particular skin types reacting in an adverse way to any treatment? Dr G: Skin types are a good starting point for determining what treatments are suitable for an individual. Darker skin types are more prone to adverse reactions such as Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH) that is very difficult to treat once it occurs. There are many other factors that can influence the modalities chosen to address skin concerns safely and effectively. Genetics, underlying medical conditions or medications you’re taking may affect how your body reacts to the skin trauma from treatments. Lifestyle factors are also important, particularly sun exposure and your general health. At North Coast Medispa, we […]
Cutera In Who Do We Trust? We Turn Our Attention to the Companies Behind the Devices… May 16, 2016 - There’s been a lot of media and publicity lately on dodgy practitioners and the dangers of getting substandard results when having laser, light or injectable treatments. What we haven’t focussed on yet is the actual technologies and machines these practitioners are using when getting their dodgy results. As with practitioners, there are dodgy technology companies copying and trying to make a buck; and then there are the genuine, quality companies producing innovative and top of the range technologies that are transforming the non-surgical aesthetic industry. There are a few companies to look at but we’ll start at the top. Cutera are definitely one of the best and most well-respected. Having been founded by veteran laser and optical engineers in 1998, they are at the forefront of the medical aesthetic industry with devices that deliver high performance results with a focus on safety and patient satisfaction. Pioneers of the industry, Cutera focus their designs around the needs of their customers and constantly develop new devices and solutions based on a combination of new scientific discoveries and what the practitioners using their machines are demanding. The engineers who founded Cutera actually developed the first Nd YAG laser, which all other lasers from […]
Facial Rejuvenation Treatments Laser Treatments for Facial Rejuvenation May 5, 2016 - As we age the effects of the harsh Australian sun take their toll on the appearance of our skin. Generally, lines appear around the eyes and lips first. Then, as the collagen beneath our skin breaks down, deeper lines begin to appear, as well as obvious sun damage in the form of hyper-pigmentation (unattractive dark blotches). The scarring of acne may worsen with age with an increase in redness, capillaries and facial veins more obvious. These can begin to appear along with a less firm surface to our skin. Laser facial rejuvenation can help repair and renew our skin, producing excellent results. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) skin rejuvenation is a form of light-based skin therapy. By using safe and effective laser in a small area of the skin particular skin issues can be targeted and corrected. This IPL technology works by lasers targeting cells and causing damage to the area. This damage promotes a wound-healing response in the skin, without a major tissue build-up. After treatment, the skin begins to rapidly produce new skin cells, which replace the old and damaged areas of skin. Fractional Laser uses pinpoint, computer-guided precision to create micro-channels in the skin. This initiates the body’s […]

Skin Deep Skin Deep – Addressing Your Skin Issues November 19, 2015 - Our skin covers and protects our muscles, bones and internal organs. As such it is exposed to daily stresses such as sun, pollution, chemicals and other such factors. This makes it virtually impossible to cover up any signs of ageing, wear and tear. Moisturising, exfoliating and using a good sunscreen all help of course, as does drinking lots of water. Regardless, when it comes down to it, our skin ends up with all sorts of spots, blemishes and imperfections that just don’t budge unless we ramp up the maintenance a notch. This is where Cutera come in. Cutera are a US-based team of laser engineers who developed ND:Yag technology. They are an awesome bunch of people in the know when it comes to combining the latest in technology with skin care and maintenance. They release some of the most advanced and results-driven laser and lights on the market and we want to bring them to your attention just in time for you to find a practitioner and sort yourself out before Christmas time where many of us have time off (beach, lazing in the park, showing a bit more skin, being body confident, etc.!). Two of their most popular and […]
Dr Tahl Humes Dr Tahl Humes, Cutera University forum February 27, 2015 - Medical Director and Owner of Vitahl Medical Aesthetics in Colorado in the US, Dr Tahl Humes is immersed in the cosmetic and laser industry. She is considered one of the best injectors in the country, and she makes it her business to be up-to-date and trained in the latest technologies and devices to offer to her clients. Among her many accolades and involvements, she is one of the expert consultants for Cutera and when I attended the Cutera University Forum in Sydney recently, I was lucky enough to have her answer some questions. 1. Dr Humes, what motivated you to become a cosmetic surgeon? I first became interested in aesthetic medicine when I was approaching my 30th birthday. I knew that as I aged, I wanted to age well, and I started looking into options. As I was looking at different anti-aging options, I realized that I was capable of performing the treatments, and I started taking courses in aesthetic medicine. 2. With all the different laser treatments, devices and technology on the market today, and with different doctors endorsing different products, how is the consumer expected to objectively identify which treatment is right for them? It can be difficult […]
Cutera University Cutera University – leading the way February 25, 2015 - Cutera is a company leading the way with new technology and innovations in laser and radio frequency devices. They have a range of products on the market that are considered some of the best in the industry. It was for these reasons that I was really excited to be attending the Cutera University Clinical Forum held in Sydney recently, where the world first and only dual wavelength and dual pulse duration laser system “enLIGHTen” was being launched into Australia. What is the enLIGHTen? It’s a Picosecond + Nanosecond laser system, for tattoo removal and the treatment of benign pigmented lesions. Check out this bloggers experience with it – amazing results with just 1 session already!! Not only did I learn heaps about the actual devices Cutera has developed, but I was surrounded by expert surgeons and practitioners just as passionate as I am about the cosmetic industry all weekend! Some of the topics discussed included laser physics and safety, difficult to treat patients, short pulse lasers (for tattoo removal and pigment discolouration treatment) and combination therapies (this is a really interesting topic that I will be writing more about in the near future so keep an eye out!). Also discussed […]
Laser Genesis Laser Genesis January 15, 2015 - Laser Genesis by Cutera sounds like some form of spacecraft but its not! It’s a laser that performs skin therapy and is able to treat many things including large pores, open pores, wrinkles, redness, acne, scars, age spots, capillaries, rosacea, sun damage, facial veins, spider veins, skin vessels, and uneven skin textures plus much more. Pretty impressive huh? This laser is companion to the Excel V Laser. Which I recently spoke about in one of my video updates. The Laser Genesis uses high-power microsecond pulses at high repetition rates to safely heat the dermis, stimulating collagen and reducing redness. It can also be used on all skin types. And there is not down time. Sometimes there is a little redness but that quickly clears up. For more information on the Laser Genesis with a complete run down of the procedure click here. Younger looking skin with radio wave technology Younger looking skin with radio wave technology May 30, 2013 - Younger, Healthier Skin – Quick and Painless There is any number of non-surgical treatments available in the market to assist people in achieving a younger healthier looking skin. These include skin surface treatments such as micro dermabrasion, injectables such as fillers and Anti-wrinkle injections, laser treatments such as Fraxel  and radio wave treatments like Ultherapy, Ulthera and Pelleve. Radio wave treatments have become increasingly popular in recent years due to them being quick and relatively painless. Firstly though and in order to understand how the radio wave treatments work it is useful to have a short discussion on why skin becomes wrinkly and what skin care regimes should be implemented in order to give your face the best possible chance to have a healthy glow and for you to be as young looking as possible. Younger looking skin depends on collagen. You have probably all heard or read about collagen. You may have even bought collagen supplement pills or drinks on the basis of marketing claims that they will promote the production of collagen in your body. Well I am sorry to say that there is no scientific evidence to back up those claims. It is very true however that […]
