Upper Body Lift

The expectations that come with major weight loss is that you will instantly look and feel great. This however is not always the case. A common cause for concern after major weight loss is the sagging skin. An upper body lift is a means to solve the problems of upper back rolls, upper arm excess and sagging breasts that occur after massive weight loss. Furthermore, this surgical procedure helps to lift and sculpt those areas.

It is essential to know what the normal shape is and the right position of the infra-mammary crease in order to form an appealing reconstruction of the deformities created by weight gain and massive weight loss.

Upper body lift preparations:

There are varied opinions as to the best time for plastic surgery after weight loss. It is always best to be ‘stable’ when you do decide to have plastic surgery after your weight loss journey. To give the body time to become stable, it is usually recommended that between 18 to 24 months after your weight loss is best. During this time, the patient may have already dropped most of their excess weight and have significant excess tissue and laxity. Furthermore, most patients during this time have minimal nutritional reserves after months of reduced food and calorie intake and continued malabsorption of fat, carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins, and proteins.

The surgeon will first examine the body and the procedure will be tailored according to each individual’s condition. Depending on the consultation and outcomes required, it may be decided that a variety of plastic surgeries be undertaken. These can include brachioplasty, liposuction, tummy tuck, breast lift and or breast reduction, and or breast implants.

Reasons why people undergo this procedure really vary, here are just a few of the benefits:

  • Gets rid of upper back rolls.
  • Takes away the upper arm excess.
  • Removes the breast/chest rolls.
  • Lifts the infra mammary crease to its proper position.
  • Correct positioning of the infra mammary crease will result in proper position proportion of the entire chest, and is helpful for breast reduction, breast lift and breast augmentation.
  • Results to smooth, tighten and sculpt body shape.
  • Eliminates chafing and rashes due to loose skin.
Risks and Complications
  • Infection (which is possible in all surgical procedures).
  • Long recovery time.
  • Large scars (which your surgeon may hide or minimize).

Note: These recovery instructions are simply an example. If undergoing an upper body lift always follow the steps directed by your surgeon.

Body lift after massive weight loss Body Lift after Massive Weight Loss July 31, 2017 - When you lose a large amount of weight often you are still left feeling deflated. Literally. You get rid of the fat but the skin doesn’t bounce back and so you are left feeling and looking like an underweight elephant with rolls and sags everywhere you look. For some, an abdominoplasty won’t quite cut it… excuse the pun. The only thing that will cut it (all off) is a circumferential or full body lift. Dr Gavin Sandercoe in Bella Vista NSW has performed many a full body lift and chats to us about what’s involved. Let’s look at what’s involved in a body lift after massive weight loss. Why is there so much skin? Dr Sandercoe says after you lose your fat the degree to which the skin retracts to its initial state depends on a handful of factors. “It’s genetics, the amount of remaining fat and the remaining structural integrity or tone of the skin. The rate of weight loss is actually less important that the rate of initial weight gain!” He goes on to say, “Although you can strengthen the underlying muscles and lose the remaining fat, there is no method (other than surgery) of tightening the overlying […]
Dr Richard Maxwell on the Body Lift Dr Richard Maxwell on the Body Lift October 31, 2016 - Trish Hammond: All right, well I’m here today with Dr. Richard Maxwell, who’s a specialist plastic surgeon at Cosmetic Surgery for Women based in Hawthorn. We’re going to have a talk today about body lifts and the fact that they’re becoming more popular, a little bit about them so just give me a bit of insight about them. Thank you for taking the time today. Dr Richard Maxwell: You’re welcome. Trish Hammond: You do a lot of body lifts, don’t you? Dr Richard Maxwell: Yes, I do a lot of body lifting surgery. It’s my main interest these days. Trish Hammond: Yeah, okay. Have you noticed there’s more of a demand for it. Who’s the best person that it’s for? Dr Richard Maxwell: Yeah, there’s an increase in demand for it. I call it body contouring surgery after dramatic weight loss rather than body lifting. Body lifting is a bit confusing because in fact the lower body lifts, we’re lifting the back, but we’re actually pulling down the front. We do talk about lower body lift and upper body lift. The upper body lift includes the arm reductions, lateral chest reduction, and breast surgery in women and gynaecomastia in the […]
Jo’s Story – circumferential body lift, brachioplasty, thigh lift, abdominoplasty and liposuction October 20, 2016 - For most of us, the idea of a 7 hour marathon on the operating table is a little (lot!) scary. However, in the hands of the right surgeon, and when you combine several different procedures to be performed in one go, it can absolutely be the best way to go. Jo, was brave enough to share her story with us. She had a circumferential body lift, brachioplasty, thigh lift, abdominoplasty and liposuction all in the one procedure. Jo is a 53 year old nurse whose story starts when she had a gastric sleeve in 2014 and lost 50kgs. Because of the massive weightloss Jo had heaps of excess skin. She says, “I had empty skin that exercise just didn’t get rid of. My arms bothered me the most – they were big and floppy. Also, my inner thighs were drooping down to my knees.” Making the Right Decision Jo says she initially tossed up going overseas for her surgery but never got around to organising it. One of the girls at her work had had surgery with Dr Mark Hanikeri, Plastic, Reconstructive and Cosmetic Surgeon based in Subiaco, WA, and so Jo decided to make an appointment with him. She […]
Body Contouring Surgery Options with Dr Mark Hanikeri, Subiaco WA July 6, 2016 - Since the start of time, looking beautiful has been a desire of the people irrespective of culture, creed, area and status. To fulfil the desire to look beautiful, different products, cosmetics and surgical methods have been introduced all over the world. Surgical body contouring is one of those procedures that is very popular in today’s world. Like other parts of the world, surgical body contouring in Western Australia is very popular. There are numerous surgical procedures offered by surgeons such as Dr Mark Hanikeri in WA to shape your body; some of the most important ones are listed below. Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) Arm Lift (Brachioplasty) Body Lift (Belt Lipectomy) Breast lift Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) The abdomen (or tummy area) is one of the first body parts that starts bulging well before the other parts start drooping. To shape the abdomen a procedure known as abdominoplasty is performed. An abdominoplasty involves excess tissues of the abdomen being removed to achieve a more toned shape. More importantly, if there is loose muscle underneath the skin, this is tightened to give a firmer, smaller waist. It is an anesthetic based procedure that is carried out under the supervision of a highly qualified surgeon. […]
Body Lift - what's the Medicare story? Body Lift – what’s the Medicare story? With Dr Tim, Cosmetic Culture NSW July 4, 2016 - Trish: I’m here today with Dr. Tim from Cosmetic Culture, and they’re based in Penrith, Pyrmont and Lane Cove, in Sydney. Thank you so much for taking the time to talk to us today today. Dr. Tim: Thank you for having me. Trish: We’re going to talk about body lift. It’s one of the procedure I’m passionate about. Can you tell us a little bit about the body lift. What actually is the body lift procedure? Dr. Tim: In a nutshell, the body lift is really just taking out a tyre, if you like, of tissue, which is skin fat around the body. You can either take a tyre that’s very low on the body so that you’re lifting up more of the buttock or you can take a tyre a little bit higher up that’s giving you a better waistline. It’s really taking a tyre of tissue right off the body and then re-opposing the two edges of the skin and tissues. Trish: Like the tree rim. Dr. Tim: Yeah, it’s like a tree rim. Speaker 1: Who is this procedure good for? Who is the best candidate for it? Dr. Tim: It’s typically aimed for patients who have […]
Karen's Real Story Are multiple procedures for you? Check out Karen’s real story April 27, 2016 - I want to introduce another woman who has overcome many obstacles in life, and come out the other end intact, happy, and inspiring! I met Karen online one of our closed social media groups when I was having my own abdominoplasty surgery recently. She was a couple of weeks post-op; I was reaching out and sharing my surgery and experiences and so was she – we connected immediately. You know what it’s like – when you meet someone and they just ‘fit’, they feel like they’re part of your tribe. You’ve shared a similar journey. So let me share Karen’s story. At 125kg and at 36yrs old, Karen tried to lose weight with diet, exercise and obsessive compulsive bingeing (mmmmm I feel like I’m looking in a mirror here!). In 2010 she had a lapband, however because it was making her life a misery by not being able to eat, she had it removed in November 2013. She then had a gastric sleeve in March 2014. Over 6 years Karen lost about 35kgs (22kgs lost after the sleeve) and maintained a weight of about 89kgs for around 18 months. Although she still had a way to go, Karen decided she […]
Dr Malcolm Linsell Interview Helping women get their bodies and confidence back September 4, 2015 - I love my kids… And I want my body back! Dr Linsell is a well respected Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeon. Among other specialties Dr Linsell is known for his work with mothers wanting to regain their pre-pregnancy bodies as well as women over 35 who want to feel a whole lot better about themselves. Thank you so much for taking the time to talk to us today. PSH: It’s interesting to think that at the same time the average age that women are choosing to have children is rising, that the cosmetic and plastic surgery industries are becoming more accessible and accepted in society than ever before. What do you see as being the most popular increasingly asked for procedure for you at the moment? Dr Linsell: You know it’s really interesting because you’re right, plastic surgery has become more socially acceptable and I think that’s one of the major reasons why women are seeking these sorts of procedures. The most common operation is still probably still breast augmentation. Liposuction is also common, and in my hands in particular is abdominoplasty because it’s something I’ve taken a real interest in over the last 25 years or so. I think the […]
Amber's Lower Body Lift Lower Body Lift – Amber’s Journey March 17, 2015 - Getting a Lower Body Lift was the second part of Amber’s journey. The first was losing 89kgs! Deciding one day that she was going to change her life, Amber worked really hard to lose the weight and turned into a gym junkie! However, this created another problem. “Losing 89kgs in 18 months created a lot of excess skin and it was getting me down. I was working so extremely hard exercising but the skin wasn’t going anywhere – only more skin was being created,” Amber tells us. So Amber realised the only solution to get rid of all this excess skin was to have surgery. She looked into it, did her research, consulted with physicians and came to the conclusion that the Lower Body Lift was suited to what she needed. We asked Amber if the surgery ran smoothly, or if there were any unexpected trials or hurdles along the way. “Surgery mostly ran smoothly. I was under (the anaesthetic) for longer than they expected. The next morning after the surgery they tried to get me up out of bed. I fainted and needed a blood transfusion. I ended up going home with 4 drains in a few days later. […]

Jess’ Story November 18, 2013 - Before I had my Gastric Sleeve surgery in 2011, I asked the opinions of friends and family. What did they think of the surgery, would it help me, was it appropriate for me, could I do something so drastic, could I lose weight, could I stick to a healthy diet? I genuinely wanted to know what the people I cared about most thought about my future. After careful research, most of them were really positive and encouraging. Some told me that I was a cheater, and that I was taking the easy way out. I didn’t listen to those negative and nasty people. If they preferred me sick or dead because of my weight than me having surgery to help myself, then there was no longer room for them in my life. You find out who your real friends are when you are going through a tough time. As hard as it is, it’s best to wipe these people from your life. A lion doesn’t lose sleep over the opinions of sheep. If I had listened to those people and what they wanted, I would still be morbidly obese, horribly depressed and sick. It was the best decision I ever […]

Jessie - My Body Lift and Breast Lift & Augmentation Jessie – My Body Lift and Breast Lift & Augmentation September 3, 2013 - I met Jessie a week ago, after she put a review up for Dr Dilip Gahankari. Wow is all I can say. I LOVE this girl! She’s only 21 years old and has lived the majority of her life (at least up till now!) in a body that on the outside, wasn’t really who she was on the inside. We will be doing a full story on Jessie and her journey in the next few weeks, so make sure you follow our blog to keep up to date with her story. In the meantime, here’s what the beautiful Jessie had to say about the surgeon that did her body lift earlier this year. “I am currently 4 months out from a breast lift/augment and body lift after massive weight loss. I had a Gastric Sleeve in April 2011, worked my butt off (literally) with exercise and healthy food, and lost around 70kg. Dilip and his team are absolutely phenomenal. His support, information, resources and expertise was incredible. I had (and still have) 24 hour contact available to me with him and his primary nurse. I had zero complications (aside from pain etc to be expected), and I’ve been back at […]
