“Hi Anonymous
I can only assume that MAAFPS stands for Member of Australasian Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery.
Their website states “Current members of the Academy include specialist otolaryngologists, head and neck surgeons, ophthalmologists, dermatologists, general plastic surgeons, oral surgeons and maxillofacial surgeons.”
As such, membership of this association tells you little about the doctor other than their interest in facial cosmetic surgery. It gives no information about a minimum training standard, which is the most thing that can be learnt from the initials after a doctor’s name.
The best way to know a doctor’s qualifications is to search their name on the AHPRA website https://www.ahpra.gov.au
Use the “Check your health practitioner is registered” search, and it will tell you if they are trained as a plastic surgeon, ENT surgeon, general surgeon or a general practitioner (with no formal government endorsed training in cosmetic surgery).”
