Trish Hammond: I’m here today with Barry from Austramedex, and we’re going to have a little chat about Silhouette Soft threads, which is a new style thread that’s on the market.

Thanks, Barry.

Barry: Thanks, Trish.

Trish Hammond: Tell us a bit about them, what’s so great about the silhouette soft threads?

Barry: Silhouette Soft has really changed what we thought threads could do in the past. Threads have been out since about 2002. When threads started they were polypropylene permanent threads that would go under the skin, with little barbs cut in it. The little barbs would do the lifting. Great idea, it worked well, but had a lot of problems.

Trish Hammond: That’s for here …

Barry: It was really for the mid-face, when it was first set up. They were being used in the brow as well. But the problem that we had with those little barbs, they used to have the ability to peel off and migrate, pop out of the skin, because they weren’t breaking down.

Trish Hammond: Right.

Barry: Then as time went on, absorbable threads were made with smaller barbs. That was great, that minimised the problems, but it also minimised the result that the product would get. With Silhouette Soft what’s happened is that the barbs have gone altogether. What’s being used is a little cone … When I say little, tiny little cones, moulded cones, that are made of an absorbable material tied to an absorbable thread. These cones are actually in opposing directions, so when you lift one side it’s lifting the tissue, and the other cones on the opposite side in the opposite direction are supporting it.

What they can do, we can put them in straight lines in all different areas. Basically, any pattern can be simulated with the fingers. It can go like this, or like this, or so on and so forth.

The main area of attraction is mid-face and lower face, but also available for brow, neck, and so on and so forth.

Trish Hammond: If you need that bit of a lift, so how it’s designed you can use it wherever you want, and it’s just got the cone shapes so that they sort of hold that-

Barry: Correct, it’s like a hook picking up a sheet or something like that. The first set of cones will pull the skin up … Like this side, the thread will come up and the other cones will hold it in place. If we think here it’s a bit easier; the first cones will be going this way, and will pull the skin, and the other cones will hold it in place. Like an anchor.

Trish Hammond: It’s a nice little anchor-

Barry: Totally.

Trish Hammond: If you just need a little lift, you don’t want to go down the surgical path-

Barry: Subtle. This isn’t a face lift. This is a refreshed look. Great for jowls, great for mid-face. Unlike other threads, a lot of the other threads that are still out there a lot of local anaesthesia is needed. That’s not a bad thing, but it’s needed for a reason. Because you’re having to manipulate the skin, and that’s more swelling and so on and so forth. With Silhouette Soft there’s just a small amount of anaesthesia at the entry and exit points, and that’s it.

Trish Hammond: It’s done in a clinic?

Barry: Done in a clinic.

Trish Hammond: You just need numbing cream?

Barry: No, small amount of local anaesthesia.

Trish Hammond: Okay, okay.

Barry: That’s the worst part, it’s just local that you sometimes have for your fillers, sometimes they’ll mix it in. It’s just basic local.

Trish Hammond: How long does the procedure take? I suppose that depends on what you’re having done.

Barry: Depends on what you’re having done. Between 30 and 60 minutes. It depends on area.

Trish Hammond: So half to an hour?

Barry: Half to an hour. Honestly, sometimes the marking takes longer than the procedure itself.

Trish Hammond: I’ve actually seen the procedure being done, and there’s a lot of time spent marking and it looked very comfortable for the lady that was having it done. She looked amazing afterwards, so it’s a nice little lift.

Barry: What’s interesting, because we do a lot of training, no one in Australia is allowed to use this product without us being there. We’re absolutely strict on that. As easy as it is, we want to be able to ensure that it’s done properly so that the results are there. Any doctor that you go and see has been trained by us, we don’t let the product out of [inaudible 00:03:51].

In three of those training sessions, I’ve had patients fall asleep on the table.

Trish Hammond: Wow, sounds perfect.

Barry: We’re done.

Trish Hammond: There’s quite a few practitioners around Australia doing it now?

Barry: There’s lots doing it. In fact Australia is, as of December last year, Australia is in the top 5 countries in the world for Silhouette Soft.

Trish Hammond: Fantastic.

All right, so if you’re wanting that little bit of a lift and you’re not ready to go down the surgical path, you just want something either in between or as an alternative, or whatever, and you want to find out who does it near you, drop us an email at Or you can give us a call on the number above.

Thank you so much for taking the time.

Barry: Thanks Trish, absolute pleasure.
