BELKYRA® is an injectable drug used to contour and shape under the chin and around the jawline. This non-surgical treatment can reduce double chins and destroy unwanted fatty tissue in the targeted area. Also known as Kybella in the United States, BELKYRA® is an artificial form of deoxycholic acid (a substance found naturally in our bodies) and works by targeting the fat cell membranes and destroying them, whereby your body then metabolises them and releases them out of the body.

This is a non-invasive procedure and while you may experience some swelling and redness, you can usually return to your normal daily activities straight after the treatment.

The BELKYRA® treatment involves the patient receiving injections with a tiny needle beneath the chin and around the jawline, or in the targeted areas. The number of injections depends on the size of the area/s to be treated. It is estimated that approximately 40 – 50 injections will be made in any one treatment which takes around 15 – 30 minutes.

Most patients will require on average 2 – 4 treatment sessions with a maximum of 6 in order to maximise best results. Treatments are usually done 4 – 6 weeks apart. It expected that after you achieve your initial desired results, they should be maintained for at least four years.

Q. Can BELKYRA® be used anywhere on the body?

A. No. BELKYRA® is only approved for in the submental region.

Q. Is BELKYRA® suitable for everyone?

A. It is recommended that women who are breastfeeding or pregnant are not suitable. It is also advised that anyone with liver or heart problems may not be suitable for BELKYRA®.

You may also not be suitable if you have any medical conditions in or near the neck or have, or have had trouble swallowing.

Also, keep in mind that BELKYRA® is not able to remove excess skin, so if you have too much skin around your neck area you may be better suited to a neck lift.

Q. Does BELKYRA® hurt?

A. Your practitioner should apply a numbing cream or local anesthetic to minimise any pain. Ice is also utilised to control pain from the injections.

Q. Is there any downtime?

A. No. Besides some patients experiencing redness and swelling you should be able to return to your daily activities immediately after the treatment. Some practitioners advise not to partake in vigorous activity in order to minimise swelling.

Q. Are there any side effects?

A. As with other injectable treatments, you may experience side effects with BELKYRA®. Most
patients experience mild or moderate pain or discomfort at the time BELKYRA® is injected.
Whilst it is not common, you may experience any of the following:
• bruising
• pain
• numbness
• swelling
• redness
• tingling
• formation of small areas of hardness
• itching around the treatment area

While unlikely, talk to your clinician if you experience trouble swallowing, an uneven smile, taste disturbances, or discolouration, unusual hair loss or an ulcer (open sore) at the site of injection.

‘Chin Up’ for those with excess fat March 13, 2018 - The latest injectable product, Belkyra, now offers a ‘quick fix’ for those with excess fat beneath their chin. One woman who has battled the dreaded double chin all her life is Sarah. Sarah shares her story with us about why she decided to try Belkyra with Dr Patrick Briggs, Plastic Surgeon in Perth, and how happy she is with her results. Like many others, Sarah has had a small fat pocket beneath her chin since she was a teenager. Most people believe that to have a double chin you must be overweight but Sarah says she has had it even at her smallest when she was a professional ballet dancer. “I have always had fat under my chin, I remember when I was getting my photos taken for Royal Ballet School, I had to do lots of side profile shots, and even then when I was so slim I still had a fatty chin. I have always been self-conscious about my double chin. It is a family trait and gets saggy with age.” Belkyra, also known as Kybella in America, uses an acid also found in our own gallbladders to dissolve fat in small areas on the body. The treatment […]
Jodie and Nicole’s Belkyra Treatment at North Coast Medispa January 2, 2018 - Just recently I was lucky enough to watch Kerry from North Coast Medispa who was treating patients for their second Belkyra treatment, two lovely ladies, Jodie & Nicole. Jodie had her first treatment 9 weeks prior to her second treatment. She was told not to expect too much after her first treatment, but she definitely noticed feeling about half the bulk gone, with a bit of tightening. So what is Belkyra and how does Belkyra work? Belkyra contains synthesised deoxycholic acid. This occurs naturally in the body and aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. So Belkyra is just a synthetic version of that; and how it actually works is by destroying the fat cell membrane. When injected below the chin, Belkyra breaks down the fat cells, causing the fat to then be absorbed by the body. So unlike other fat reduction methods where they just shrink the fat cells, Belkyra actually completely destroys the fat cells so it can’t ever grow back again. Basically our fat cells are pretty much laid down by the age of 16 or 17 – they either just expand or contract as we gain or lose weight. Once they’ve actually been destroyed […]

Belkyra Kerry Lynch from North Coast Medispa talks Belkyra November 8, 2017 - Trish Hammond: Great. Well I’m here today with Kerry, Kerry Lynch who’s from North Coast Medispa. They’re based in Lismore and they’re also based in Ballina and there’s a dermatologist onboard as well. Kerry’s a nurse practitioner who’s in charge of all of the non-surgical treatments that they do. Welcome, Kerry. Kerry Lynch: Good morning, Trish. Trish Hammond: Nice to speak to you. Kerry Lynch: Yes, good morning. Trish Hammond: I’ve been having lots of questions from our community about Belkyra, or Kybella as it’s called in the US, which I know you’re not allowed to mention the name because it’s an S4 drug, but it’s the injectable for reducing fat under the chin and everyone’s pretty excited by it. I know some people that have had it done have been really happy and there are some that are waiting for their second treatment, but can you just give us a bit of a rundown for the average person out there who doesn’t know what it is and tell us what it is and what it’s good for? Kerry Lynch: Sure. The results with this treatment is similar to liposuction when you have fat removed from under the chin. It’s […]

Belkyra - chin reduction Belkyra is the latest contouring treatment perfect for getting rid of double chins May 18, 2017 - We’ve been hearing about it for months now, and it’s finally here. Belkyra is the latest contouring treatment perfect for getting rid of double chins and it’s now available in Australia and Dr Jeremy Hunt from Edgecliff in NSW is producing some impressive results. We were able to chat with one of his super happy patients, Rachael. We asked her some questions to find out more about Belkyra. PSH: What motivated you to have the Belkyra treatment? What areas of your body did you have the treatment on? Rachael: I was motivated to have the Belkyra treatment as I was intrigued by the advancement of the industry in providing somewhat of a magic ‘liquid liposuction’ product. I have had surgical liposuction and am familiar with its associated cost, pain of surgery plus discomfort and length of recovery time, therefore I was impressed to see the affordable and ‘quick to administer’ nature of the Belkyra treatment, which had little to no downtime for recovery. I had the ‘double chin’ treatment currently offered by Belkyra as it is the only available treatment area in Australia at the present time. PSH: Why Belkyra over other treatments on the market? Rachael: The concept of […]
Non-Surgical Fat Reduction under the Chin Dr Mark Magnusson talks about permanent fat reduction beneath the chin… April 5, 2017 - Mark Magnusson: Hi, my name is Mark Magnusson, I’m the Medical Director at the Allure Clinic in Toowoomba, and we’re here today to talk about a new first-in-class non-surgical treatment for permanent fat reduction beneath the chin. It deals with the double chin, but more importantly it allows us to sculpt the neck, contour the jawline and chin. It is a very popular treatment internationally. It’s been released over the last 18 to 24 months in the US and Canada, and only just been released in Australia. We’ve had it in our clinic now for the last three months as one of the trial sites in Australia, and we’re very happy with the results. I’m sure everyone else who tries it will be as well. What we’re going to demonstrate today is how the treatment is planned so that you can get a little bit of an idea about the process. So, what we’re looking at … This is Susie who’s happy to be with us. Susie: Hello. Mark Magnusson: What we’re talking about … Just lean forward a little bit, your chin, just look down a little bit. We’re talking about this. We’re talking about trimming this area. The […]
Coolsculpting Mini vs Belkyra Coolsculpting Mini -V- Belkyra: What’s the options for Non-Surgical Chin Contouring? March 17, 2017 - The last few years has seen a rise in the “selfie generation” as more and more people take more and more pics of themselves from various flattering ( and unflattering) angles. This may perhaps go some way in explaining the increase in enquiries for rejuvenating the face and especially neck regions in patients. No one likes a double chin especially in photos and now other than the traditional liposuction and neck lift procedures, there are non surgical treatments that have proven to be highly effective. So what’s the options for non-surgical chin contouring? Here we look at Coolsculpting Mini –V- Belkyra. A strong jaw line conveys strength, confidence, and youthfulness. Over 80 percent of American patients surveyed said they’d like to eliminate some of the fat beneath their chins and give themselves a better defined neck. This is easier said than done though as this region is one of the more difficult areas for your body to remove fat from and often this area doesn’t respond well to diet and exercise. Traditionally, treatment here required a surgical option whether with liposuction or via neck lift surgery. Recently though, the FDA has approved two new procedures to help treat this area […]
